I make this with lean ground beef and Rotel tomatos, they have mild to hot flavors. never put golden raisin in it though. For quicker fix, the bagged shredded cabbage helps. Have used preshredded cabbage and 2 cups of cooked rice and made it in a saucepan on the stove. Just cook meat, add onion, bellpepper, garlic and cabbage. when veggies are almost done stir in cooked rice and let simmer to blend all together

I made mine in the oven on 325 degrees, put foil over pot to hold in moisture and then put on the lid. Took about 3 hours, checked after 2 and then took out when the cabbage looked translucent.

@Bev 36 - It's good to know that you can make this dish in a frying pan if you don't have a rice cooker. If you want to add more flavor to this dish, you could always add seasonings like salt, freshly cracker black pepper, garlic or thyme to taste to the recipe - FaveHealthyRecipes Editors

I made this last night without a rice cooker. I cooked it like I do Spanish Rice. Put all in a tight covered fry pan and simmered for 25 minutes and let stand for 10 I did not use the susage [ husband don't like susage] and found it to be very bland. I will not make it again.

try it with ground beef, instead of can tomatoes, use Rotel or any other brand of diced tomatoes with green chilis. Also garlic gives it a great flavor

I don't own a rice cooker, but I am going to try making this in a slow cooker. I hope it will work as the recipe sounds really good. Has anyone tried this or any other ideas about what to use?

you can cook it in the oven, in a saucepan or skillet with lid. its easily adapted to what you have available i find it easier and just as good to use cooked rice mixed in after meat is cooked, veggies added and cooked till veggies are tender, then mix in cooked rice, stir well and simmer till heated thru. you can add a little water to mix if too dry to simmer
