The UltraMetabolism Diet
What it is: The goal of the UltraMetabolism Diet is to eat the right foods to speed your metabolism and help you lose weight. The idea is that eating natural foods that are rich in colors and phytonutrients will suppress your appetite.
How it works: Author Dr. Mark Hyman bases the diet on neutrogenomics, which is how our food communicates with our genes and controls our health. Hyman outlines seven keys to weight loss, including: controlling appetite, reducing stress, managing cellular inflammation, preventing cellular rust, speeding your metabolism, optimizing thyroid function and detoxifying your liver. The diet has two phases, the first of which is a detox phase where you eat whole foods and avoid dairy, wheat and eggs. The second phase reintroduces foods into your diet so you can determine your tolerance for each one. Dieters are encouraged to eat every three hours to control hunger and boost the metabolism, but are not permitted to eat within three hours of going to bed.
What you do: Dieters on the ultrametabolism diet are discouraged from consuming any sugar, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated fats, refined grains, alcohol or caffeine. Dieters are encouraged to eat fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, organic foods and soy products. There are no portion restrictions or calorie counts on this diet.
Benefits: The diet’s emphasis on whole foods, exercise and stress reduction are all positive influences on weight loss and healthy living.
The Down Side: Experts complain that the language of the book may be too complex for some and that neutrogenomics is a concept that has not yet been fully researched and explored in terms of its impact on weight loss. Because there are no portion restrictions, dieters may also assume they can eat as much organic food as they desire, which will result in weight gain.
