I think everyone can attest to the fact that frozen food is quick, easy, and very convenient (especially when you're busy, young, and living on a budget). However, I can't count on my fingers the amount of times I've pulled a meal out of the freezer and have been disappointed by it. There's just this lack of quality plus the actual food never looks like it does on the box. Because of my recent frozen food failures, I've been a bit turned off from them lately. Thus, I have to admit that I was a tad wary when I received Fazoli's Frozen Snacks to sample and review. But boy was I surprised!
I got to try three types of frozen snacks. First, I tasted the six cheese toasted ravioli. When I pulled them out of the box I was shocked that they were even bigger than the picture! Then, I looked at the serving size to see that three huge pieces were just 240 calories! I was so excited becauser ravioli is one of my favorites. There's something about gooey, melted cheese that drives me insane. Even though I couldn't wait to get my hands on one, I decided to use the oven instructions instead of the much faster deep frying method. Baking is way healthier than frying, so for the sake of calories, I waited the 12 minutes for them to cook in the oven. They came out of the oven looking golden and smelling fantastic. Coated with panko and herbs and filled with a creamy six cheese blend, how could these not be amazing? I picked up my crispy ravioli, dipped it into the prepared marina sauce, and then popped it in my mouth. It was loaded with cheese, but not in an overwhelming way. I was delighted by the freshness and authentic Italian flavor. I finished off my ravioli in two bites and moved on to the next sample.
The best way to describe the lasagna fritta is a cheesy ball of goodness. It is kind of like a cross between toasted ravioli and lasagna. There was the perfect ratio of cheese to sauce. The tangy marinara sauce paired nicely with the blend of ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses. You can really taste the tomato. It has the sweet acidic flavor that I look for in fresh marinara sauces. I'm not much of a meat eater, so I was glad that the Italian sausage and ground beef flavor was quite subtle.
Lastly, I tried the Parmesan boneless chicken. These remind me of chicken nuggets with an Itailan twist. The chicken itself had a good texture. It was not rubbery or dry. On its own, the chicken was a little bland, so you really need the dipping sauce. Perhaps a little more spice would have amped up the flavor. I recommend sprinkling a bit of salt and pepper on the chicken before eating. When paired with the tangy marina sauce, you have a terrific bite size appetizer. I am definitely going to serve these to my family on the next Sunday football watch party. It is finger food at its finest.
